Intro: Venomous BeautyThis film (not to be confused with Carol Baker's other work "Kiss Me, Kill Me" aka "Baba Yaga - Witch") is another work by Umberto Lenzi following his groundbreaking classic "Paranoia". It premiered in the same year as Dario Argento's "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage" (which opened the floodgates for Italian gialli) and was produced by the Martino brothers, who later made many interesting giallo films often starring the charming mistress of Eugenio Martino, Edwige Fenech. The film stars Carol Baker, whose character is the complete opposite of the innocent victim she played in "Paranoia," showcasing her acting skills. The film also features two great native European actors - Jean-Louis Trintignant and the beautiful Erika Blanc. The screenplay is remarkably well-written, full of suspense and genuine surprises. It is a clever adaptation of the French classic film "Les Diaboliques," which involves a decadent upper-class husband (Trintignant), his wife (Blanc), and a mistress (Baker), all deceitful and betraying one another. It cleverly plays with the audience's awareness of earlier films, only to add an unexpected twist. The movie also seems to be very well shot. (It's hard to believe that years later Lenzi would create nauseatingly poor cannibal films like "Cannibal Ferox" or pathetic American horror films like "The Hitcher"). However, I say "seems" because this film was only released on second- or third-generation Greek videotapes that were not only poorly transferred and scanned, but so badly done that the characters often fall off half the screen. Watching this movie is like appreciating a beautiful painting, but with both sides cut off, covered with very blurry cellophane (and with dubbed Greek subtitles). If Lenzi's bad movies like "Ferox," "Hitcher," or even the God-help-us-all "Eaten Alive" can get star treatment on DVD, why can’t "Paranoia" or this little gem? Oh, but I almost forgot - despite the title, there isn’t much deviancy in this one. Baker has more nude scenes in "Paranoia." There are some nude shots with Blanc (though in my opinion, you can never tire of them), but unfortunately, the lesbian relationship between the two is only implied. Of course, it might have just been cut out...
