Intro: A Night of RevelryIn the autumn of 1963, in order to make some money from The Beatles, who were very popular at the time, United Artists in America signed a contract with them to make a movie with the purpose of releasing the film's original soundtrack in the U.S. They brought in Walter Shenson as the producer and Richard Lester as the director, and the film A Hard Day's Night was shot in 1964. Shenson approached The Beatles in the autumn of 1963 before they headed to America, asking them to create six songs for the movie — the topics were unrestricted, but should include two ballads, two up-tempo dance numbers, and so on. During their vacation in the Caribbean, they wrote about eight or nine songs, from which Dick Lester selected six to be used in the movie. The songs were: You Can't Do That, And I Love Her, I Should Have Known Better, Tell Me Why, If I Fell, and I'm Happy Just to Dance with You. Before the shooting began on March 2, The Beatles recorded these songs at the EMI studio in London. A portion of You Can't Do That was edited out when the film was released, but it was previously issued as the B-side of the single Can’t Buy Me Love and it still appeared on the U.S. version of the soundtrack. Filming started on March 2 and ended on April 24. The film exaggeratedly portrayed a day in the life of The Beatles, with its theme stemming from a line John Lennon had said. When Lester asked John how their trip to Sweden went, John replied, 'It was a room and a car and a car and a room and a room and a car.' This line was altered slightly and became a line for 'Paul's grandfather' in the movie. Shenson initially thought he could randomly select the title of a new song for the film, but none of the six new songs seemed suitable. During filming, everyone brainstormed to find a fitting name for the film. One day, while chatting with John, he mentioned Ringo's amusing phrases and cited 'A hard day's night' as an example. John himself had also used this phrase in his recently published book, In His Own Write. Everyone agreed it could serve as the film's title. So, at Shenson's request, John wrote the theme song based on this title and recorded it during filming on April 16. The soundtrack album released in the U.S. only included these seven new songs, but for Parlophone's UK release, they returned to the studio in June to record five more new songs: I’ll Cry Instead, I’ll Be Back, Any Time At All, Things We Said Today, and When I Get Home. Combined with their previously released single Can’t Buy Me Love used in the film, the UK album included a total of 13 songs, all original compositions by The Beatles. This was the first time they were able to release an album consisting entirely of original songs. This achievement was largely due to John Lennon's prolific creativity at the time. Among these 13 songs, 9 were primarily written by him. Paul mainly wrote 3 songs and collaborated with John to write I’m Happy Just to Dance With You for George. Of course, following the principle of lead vocals by the main creator, John’s singing on this album far exceeded that of the other three, and he didn't even give Ringo a chance to perform. The film A Hard Day's Night became a classic in rock cinema, teaching an entire generation of young people the principles of rebellion, while this album marked a new phase in The Beatles' creative output, which we might call 'the mid-stage of the early period.'
