Intro: Bandit QueenThis is an amazing movie. 'Bandit Queen', a modern depiction of the real-life Indian fugitive Phoolan Devi (the 'flower goddess'), is a powerful and disturbing portrayal. The film opens with the 11-year-old Phoolan being married off to a middle-aged man. The forced marriages and abuse that follow drive her, as an orphan, into a life of robbery. What I find most striking about this film is that it does not simply depict the female lead as a 'wronged woman', but as a woman with deep psychological issues - to me, she appears to be completely deranged. There are several scenes that are quite explicit, I might say they are rated R for violence, where Phoolan gradually transforms from anger to evil. In one scene, she beats her ex-husband with a rifle butt. This - I think it portrays - is nauseating. 'Bandit Queen' is very controversial in India. It is widely regarded as Oscar-worthy material, but apparently did not make the list within the Indian filmmaking community due to political struggles. It is definitely worth watching, but I only recommend it to those with a strong stomach. It’s a true story (the real-life Phoolan Devi married above her caste and became the first Dalit to serve in the Indian parliament), but it is a story without a happy ending.
