The story takes place during World War II, where Alice (played by Gemma Arterton) is a very eccentric and reclusive writer who lives away from the hustle and bustle, hiding on a cliff by the southern coast of England, where she dedicates herself to studying science. One day, a boy named Frank (played by Lucas Bond) accidentally intrudes into Alice's isolated world. Frank comes from a war-torn area in London, and the brutal war has taken everything from him, leaving him as an orphan. For Alice, Frank's presence is clearly an offense and a disturbance, but she cannot bear to drive the child away. Thus, they begin a life together under the same roof. Frank's arrival also awakens long-buried memories for Alice, reminding her of the moments she shared with her lover Vera (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw).
