Baxter (played by Jack Lemmon) is a junior employee at a large company in New York, and his bachelor apartment is often used by the company's executives as a rendezvous spot for their affairs, which gives Baxter several promotion opportunities. Baxter has a crush on the company’s elevator operator, Fran Kubelik (played by Shirley MacLaine), and one day he finally gathers the courage to ask her out to see a play that evening. However, Baxter waits all night without any sign of Fran because she is actually the mistress of the company's executive, Jeffrey Sheldrake (played by Fred MacMurray), who is married. That night, they are having an affair in Baxter's apartment. Jeffrey swears to Fran that he will divorce his wife and be with her openly. Fran believes him, but a few weeks later she learns from Jeffrey's previous mistress that what he said was nothing but a lie.
