Louis (played by Dennis Price) is the son of a noble family, the Asternes, but his mother was disowned for eloping with an Italian singer and was rejected by the family until her death. Now an adult, Louis harbors bitter memories of how his aristocratic relatives refused to allow his mother to be buried in the family tomb, and he experiences heartbreak when his beloved Sibella (played by Joan Greenwood) rejects his proposal due to his poverty. This begins his revenge plan. He systematically schemes to murder his male relatives who have claims to the title, aiming to inherit the dukedom himself. As he becomes more adept at killing, he even spares no one, including the old, weak, and women, always finding ways to create coincidences that prevent anyone from suspecting him. However, while executing his revenge, he becomes emotionally entangled—Sibella, now married, remains connected to him, and a beautiful widow from the family, Edith (played by Valerie Hobson), falls in love with him and is willing to marry him. Just as Louis joyfully prepares to inherit the title and hold his wedding, it seems that his crimes might be exposed...
