Over 70, Cabot is a stubborn old farmer who, unlike many others who rushed to the West to seek gold, stayed in the East and carved out a piece of farmland from gravel land. He has three sons with two ex-wives but loves none of them and treats them harshly. His youngest son, Eben, particularly hates his father for taking away his mother's fortune. To ensure he can one day monopolize the inheritance, he tempts his two half-brothers into stealing a hidden sum from their father before running away. Old Cabot marries a young woman named Abbie from the city with the aim of having a successor he is satisfied with. The young stepmother stirs up intrigue with Eben, aiming to have a child to seize the estate. Unable to resist temptation, Eben has an affair with her. After Abbie gives birth, old Cabot is overjoyed and announces that the baby will be the master of the farm. Eben curses Abbie's scheme, but Abbie has genuinely fallen in love with Eben, and to prove her sincerity, she kills the baby. After reporting the incident to the police, Eben is moved by Abbie's true feelings and cannot bear to let her die alone, thus admitting to being an accomplice and going to the execution ground with her. Old Cabot still has no heir, and he can only continue farming while complaining to God.
