The film is adapted from the Noh play 'Ataka' and its Kabuki adaptation 'Kanzan Chō', telling the story of Yoshitsune, Benkei, and others traversing the Ataka Pass after a warrant for arrest was issued by Minamoto no Yoritomo. Kurosawa fully utilized the character of Enoken, creating a talkative samurai who accompanies Yoshitsune and his seven attendants.
