Alias: The Consul of Sodom Jaime Gil de Biedma (played by Jordi Mollà), a Catalan poet from Spain, was one of the most important writers in the Spanish literary scene of the 1950s. He was born on November 13, 1929, into an aristocratic family in Barcelona. His poetry was influenced by Eliot and Baudelaire, and as a young man who sympathized with communism, he was concerned about social issues, using poetry to strongly criticize the dictatorship in Spain. In the spring of 1959, Jaime arrived in Manila, Philippines, to take over his father's job at a tobacco company. At that time, he developed a strong homosexual inclination and began his life full of contradictions. As a gentleman from high society, especially as the president of a multinational company, he did not hide his sexual orientation and openly revealed it in his poetry. Homosexuality was an unpopular phenomenon in the conservative societal environment of the time, so Jaime's lifestyle was met with disdain; coupled with suspicions of being associated with a Spanish organization, Franco's regime never ceased to threaten him. This further fueled Jaime's creative passion, as he exposed the suffering of laboring people under capitalism and critiqued the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie through the discrimination and oppression of women by Franco's regime, which gained him considerable popularity; however, his poems on homosexuality also revitalized the phenomenon of homosexuality itself. Jaime's bisexual life was engulfed in a whirlpool of family, love, sex, literature, and political struggle. On one hand, he was dedicated to revealing the roots of violence and rebellion in Catalonia through poetry while also protecting the interests and reputation of the bourgeois family; on the other, he maintained an exciting lifestyle, needing friendships in the literary world and an active sex life, whether with men or women, and transformed his life and fantasies into erotic verses... On January 8, 1990, Jaime died of AIDS. In fact, well before his death, whether out of despair from the political struggle for a democratic transition under the Franco regime, or having turned into a nihilist unable to escape and submit to bourgeois indifference, losing his life goals, or indulging in personal desires, Jaime had consciously stopped his literary creation.
