The story begins in Austria in 1930, where the Jewish millionaire Victor (played by Moritz Bleibtreu) is meticulously running an art gallery with his girlfriend Lena (played by Ursula Strauss). Their business is thriving, and Rudy (played by Georg Friedrich), a genuine Aryan, is a mutual friend who has a close relationship with them. Victor has a painting by Michelangelo in his collection, but little did he know that this precious artwork would become a turning point in their fates. War breaks out, and Jews become targets of the Nazi extermination. Victor is sent to a concentration camp, and his prized painting is confiscated by Rudy, who is now an officer in the village. It becomes a 'tribute' to please the Italians among the Nazis. Unexpectedly, the painting is identified as a forgery, and Rudy is ordered to find Victor, as he is the only one who knows where the original is hidden.
