In July 1953, during the later stages of the Korean War, as various parties were conducting peace ceasefire negotiations, the U.S. military ordered Lieutenant Clemens to lead a company of American soldiers to attack Hill 255, which had no military value, in order to gain leverage at the negotiating table. They knew that the ceasefire talks in Panmunjom could reach a peace agreement at any moment, so some soldiers were reluctant to make useless sacrifices. However, Lieutenant Clemens believed it was their patriotic duty. Under his command, the U.S. forces engaged in fierce combat with Chinese and North Korean troops at Pork Chop Hill, even resorting to brutal hand-to-hand fighting. By the time reinforcements arrived, the company of 135 men had been reduced to only 25.
