A British plane was shot down by the German army while flying over the Sahara Desert. The pilot, due to his injuries, cannot remember who he is, and so he is called 'The English Patient.' Hanna is a nurse in a field hospital who decides to stay alone to care for the English Patient. They are at an abandoned monastery in Italy, far from the clamor of war, creating a quiet and leisurely atmosphere. The English Patient lies quietly on a wooden bed in the room, and an old book by the window gradually awakens his thoughts... A love story burns amidst the flames of war, transcending morality and changing the course of the battle. Archaeologist Count Almásy (played by Ralph Fiennes) travels to the Sahara Desert with explorers, where he meets the pilot Geoffrey who maps the region and his wife, Catherine (played by Kristin Scott Thomas). Almásy is deeply enchanted by Catherine's talent and beauty. As they visit a deep cave in the desert to view paintings, they discover they share much in common. Morality ultimately prevails over passion. After Catherine and Almásy separate, Geoffrey discovers his wife’s affair. Heartbroken, Geoffrey flies a plane in an attempt to kill both his wife and Almásy, but Almásy narrowly escapes, while Catherine is severely injured and Geoffrey dies. Almásy rushes to the side of the woman he loves, places her in a cave, and promises to find help and lead her out of the desert. However, things are not as easy as imagined. To save her, he takes the blame for treason, which brings him danger and ultimately leads to his downfall. In the end, he keeps his promise, but Catherine has coldly left him forever... Almásy places Catherine's body in an airplane, which is shot down by the German army while crossing the Sahara Desert, leading to the opening scene of the film. During the days caring for the English Patient, Hanna meets Kip, an Indian bomb disposal expert, and they develop feelings for each other. Even though the war has ended, Kip will still face death countless times. Ultimately, at the request of the English Patient, Hanna injects him with a large dose of morphine...
