In 1942, the flames of war from the Japanese invasion of China reached the Hebei Central Plain. There was only one path to death by bowing down and submitting; the ultimate way out was to rise up against the invaders. The people of Hebei mobilized to resist the Japanese army, with Gaojiazhang gathering a large number of militia. To counter the Japanese planes and artillery, the locals dug a complex network of tunnels using the terrain. The militia leader Gao Chuanbao (played by Zhu Longguang) led the militia in a guerrilla warfare strategy utilizing these clever tunnels. Although they suffered a lot due to the betrayal of a traitor in their ranks, Tang Binghui, the intelligent and courageous Gao Chuanbao ultimately led his team to encircle the Japanese troops through the tunnels, eliminated Tang Binghui, and captured the Japanese leader, Yamashita. The victory in the tunnel warfare heralded the strongest cry of resistance against Japan in Hebei.
