In the early 21st century, a plague wiped out 99% of the human population. The survivors relied on the inventions of scientist Goodchard to build the isolated city of Brilag, sustaining civilization. Four hundred years later, some citizens were dissatisfied with the dictatorial rule of the Goodchard regime and the ongoing disappearances, forming an armed force called the Monicans to fight back. Female warrior Ian (played by Charlize Theron) is one of the top figures in the Monicans. While completing a mission to sabotage Goodchard's surveillance system, Ian witnesses the body of her younger sister, killed by the enemy. In her fury, she receives a directive to assassinate Goodchard's head, Trevor. However, when she faces Trevor, his calling of the name 'Katherine' plunges her into a disoriented memory where she cannot act. After escaping, Ian begins to investigate the truth of the city and discovers that the long-standing disappearances are closely related to a cloning program, and the foundation of Brilag's operation is based on replicating humans.
