Photographer Jeffries (played by James Stewart) broke his left leg while taking photos in the middle of a racetrack and had to rest at home for seven weeks. Apart from the insurance company nurse Stella (played by Selma Ritter) and his girlfriend Lisa Carol Fremont (played by Grace Kelly) who come to care for him daily, the bored Jeffries can only pass the time by idly watching the daily lives of his neighbors from his window. On the second floor of the opposite apartment lives jewelry salesman Lars Thorwald (played by Raymond Burr) and his wife Anna (played by Irene Winston), who constantly argue. One rainy night, Jeffries sees Lars going out multiple times with a suitcase. The next day, Jeffries sees Lars wrapping a saw and a knife in newspaper. Jeffries becomes suspicious and suspects that Lars has killed Anna and dismembered her body. However, Jeffries did not witness the crime itself, nor did he see a body. So what is the truth? Is Jeffries's speculation merely his imagination? How will Jeffries go about searching for evidence to confirm his suspicions?
