The original material for the film's story is based on the life of Lee Chun-woo, a Korean resident in Japan, who experiences extreme mental disturbances under racial discrimination. Not only did he kill two young women, but he also wrote about the experience as a novel to submit to a newspaper, and even called the newspaper calmly after the murders. After being sentenced to death, a Korean female journalist in Japan corresponded with him, hoping to awaken his national consciousness. The film is based on this real event, but the plot almost transcends the story itself. The film begins with the sudden execution of Mr. R, without any explanation for the reason. After the execution, Mr. R surprisingly does not die; he merely loses his memory and falls into a coma. The executioners decide to restore his awareness of the crime before carrying out the second execution. Therefore, the group acts out the roles of people around Mr. R, trying to awaken R's memory, even playing the role of R's Minister of Education to kill a girl who suddenly appears. The victimized girl wakes up as a middle-aged woman dressed in traditional Korean attire, whom R refers to as sister, praising his national consciousness and criticizing Japanese imperialism. The latter half of the film depicts R's imaginary world. The executioners gather for a banquet, with R and the woman lying among them, and their conversations reflect the discussions between Lee Chun-woo and the Korean female journalist.
