In the mid-18th century, the French people were enjoying the pleasures brought by war under the leadership of King Louis XV. Due to years of war, the number of soldiers had drastically decreased, prompting the army to recruit young men from everywhere. The handsome youth Fang Fang (played by Gérard Philipe) found himself in a small town, where he had a relationship with a local girl. To escape the pressure of marriage from the girl's father, Fang Fang had to enlist in the army. Adeline (played by Gina Lollobrigida), the daughter of the recruiting sergeant, prophesied that Fang Fang would become a general and marry the king's daughter. While on his way to enlist, Fang Fang actually encountered Princess Pompido, who gifted him a tulip. From that moment, Fang Fang became infatuated with the princess and failed to notice Adeline, who had developed feelings for him over time. To see the princess, he snuck into the palace and got into big trouble. Adeline selflessly rescued him, allowing him to display his talents behind enemy lines. In the end, the lovers were united, and the initial prophecy was fully realized. The film won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 1952 Berlin Film Festival and the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival.
