After his relationship with his wife collapses, newspaper columnist Felix (played by Jack Lemmon) is kicked out of his house. Left with no choice, he temporarily moves in with his friend Oscar (played by Walter Matthau), and the two long-time buddies become roommates. Oscar and Felix's personalities are like night and day; the former has an eccentric style and a reclusive nature, often turning his home into a mess, while the latter is a neat freak who enjoys cleaning and cooking. Although the two roommates frequently bicker over trivial matters, their lives gain a spark of vitality from each other's presence, especially with the endless fantasies provided by a pair of sister roommates from England living next door. Despite Oscar's strong opposition, Felix invites the two sisters over, and to their surprise, the four of them get along well. However, as things begin to head in an ideal direction, Oscar flatly refuses to continue the arrangement, prompting an angry outburst from Felix, putting their friendship on thin ice.
