During the Cold War between the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, the Soviet Union implemented a mysterious phone brainwashing plan, sending a batch of trained spies to various locations in America, disguised as ordinary citizens, living normal lives, ready to be awakened when needed. Years later, as relations between the two countries improved, these spies were awakened by some ulterior motives through mysterious phone calls. In an effort to remedy the situation, the Soviet military dispatched a Soviet secret police officer named Grigori Burzov to handle the fallout of this plan, while the American side sent counterintelligence expert Barbara to assist Burzov in completing the mission. Throughout the investigation of the truth, these two adversaries developed a subtle affection for each other. In the end, they willingly gave up their spy identities to live as civilians together. Director Don Siegel skillfully crafted several thrilling action scenes and also expressed the disdain for the spy lifestyle, making this one of the great works starring Charles Bronson.
