This film is the first documentary shot in animated form. Israeli director Ari Folman witnessed the Sabra and Shatila massacre in Beirut, Lebanon in 1982 at the age of 19 as an Israeli soldier. More than twenty years later, with fragmented memories, Folman attempts to recall the truth of the massacre through dialogues with his comrades, friends, psychologists, and journalists who experienced the atrocity. As Folman's memories are gradually awakened, the horrors of the 1982 Lebanon War begin to unfold frame by frame. The film won the César Award for Best Foreign Film in 2008, the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Animated Film, and was a runner-up for Best Documentary. It was also nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, the BAFTA for Best Non-English Language Film, and Best Animated Film, and was included in the main competition section for the Palme d'Or at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.
