Veteran Li Changjiang (played by Andy Lau) is imprisoned due to the misdeeds of two robbery accomplices, suffering severe beatings from police officer Mao Xiangyang (played by Xu Jinjian) before being sentenced to death. On the verge of execution, Changjiang manages to escape with a saw blade given to him by his father. He finds a human smuggling group to sneak into Hong Kong, where he meets Jixin (played by Mo Shaocong) and Aman (played by Li Meifeng), whose kindness deeply touches him. Because his relatives in Hong Kong refuse to take him in, Changjiang has no choice but to work at a construction site to repay his debts to the smuggling group's leader, Brother Liang. During this time, he learns that Aman has been sold into prostitution and spends day and night thinking of ways to save her. Alone, Changjiang fights against the pimp gang but is outmatched, so he reluctantly agrees to help Hunan gang leader Shapizhu rob a jewelry store in hopes of using the gang's power to rescue Aman. Jixin, who is also working under Shapizhu, nearly gets captured during the robbery, and after Changjiang saves him, the two become close friends. After helping Shapizhu with the robbery, Changjiang finds that the gang does not honor their promise and instead uses Aman to force him to continue committing crimes. Meanwhile, Mao Xiangyang travels to Hong Kong specifically to apprehend Changjiang.
