During World War II, in Poland occupied by Germany, a plumber named Bodek (played by Robert Wieckiewicz) engages in petty theft with his partner Zapek, using the labyrinthine sewers as their best hiding place and storage. He does business with the Jewish ghetto in the city and has old connections with Ukrainian officers in the German army, enjoying a bit of freedom in turbulent times. Soon, the Germans begin to slaughter and hunt down Jews. Some Jews, unwilling to be sent to concentration camps, strike a deal with Bodek to hide in the sewers, traded by headcount. The dark and foul-smelling sewers become a refuge for Bodek to shelter the Jews, while the Jews on the surface are quickly caught. With soaring prices and continued pressure from the Germans, Zapek leaves him, and Bodek struggles alone to maintain the safety of the Jews in the sewers...
