The American Navy submarine, Tiger Shark, is about to be decommissioned. Rear Admiral Sherman arrived on the submarine early to review the logbook. During the early days of the Pacific War, the U.S. Navy was retreating step by step in Southeast Asia. The Tiger Shark nearly sank in the harbor due to bombings by Japanese aircraft. Captain Sherman (played by Cary Grant) had the mission to repair the completely non-operational and combat-capable Tiger Shark and retreat within two weeks—something that normally would take two months. However, the situation was dire, and the Tiger Shark struggled to obtain even the most basic supplies. Lieutenant Houghton reported for duty, looking and behaving like a complete playboy, and he did not understand anything about submarine operations. Captain Sherman felt he had one more trouble to deal with. Under Houghton's enthusiastic request, he became the supply officer of the Tiger Shark. Little did they know that this was the position where he could best utilize his talents. Houghton skillfully managed the supplies, achieving a thriving scene for the Tiger Shark's military provisions, and soon they set sail, while the base commander was busy investigating the theft of supplies from the base warehouse and his own office.
