In 1943, in the rural area of Bologna, Italy, an eight-year-old girl named Martina (played by Greta Zuccheri Montanari) eagerly awaits the birth of her little brother. Despite this, the adults in her family love her dearly, including her aunt Benigna (played by Alba Rohrwacher), who has returned home from the city.
