The story takes place in England in 1934, where Philby (played by Toby Stephens), Burgess (played by Tom Hollander), and Maclean (played by Rupert Penry-Jones) are three promising young men studying at Cambridge University. They are recruited by the Soviet Foreign Intelligence Service to become spies, forming what is later known as the Cambridge Spy Ring. These three ambitious young men see the Soviet Union as fertile ground for realizing their political ideals. After the outbreak of World War II, the members of the spy ring are employed by the British government, and throughout the war, they provide countless valuable intelligence to the Soviets, significantly influencing the course of the war without tangible awareness. In 1951, Burgess and Maclean flee to the Soviet Union after their identities are exposed, leaving Philby alone to endure intense pressure as he faces a harsh investigation from the British government.
