Marty (played by Colin Farrell) is a movie screenwriter who loves to drink. His friend Billy (played by Sam Rockwell) and Hans (played by Christopher Walken) make money by stealing dogs and then returning them to their owners. Marty is currently writing a script called 'Seven Psychopaths' but lacks inspiration, so Billy provides him with some material. One psychopath is a killer who leaves behind a playing card after every murder, there's a Vietnamese avenger, and a Quaker who commits suicide... Billy steals a dog, which belongs to a mob boss named Charlie (played by Woody Harrelson). Charlie, who regards his dog as his life, is desperately searching for it. He ends up finding Hans's wife in the hospital and kills her. After learning about this, an angry Billy kills his lover, who is also Charlie's lover, and then he leaves behind a playing card. It turns out that Billy is the psychopath killer. He, along with Marty and Hans, goes to the wilderness to continue writing the script while also challenging Charlie to a duel...
