At this moment, Admiral James Kirk and his crew, having completed the mission to revive Captain Spock, are piloting the stolen Klingon Bird-of-Prey (renamed the 'Bounty') back to Earth from the planet Vulcan, although they are already aware that they will face charges in a military court: they are accused of stealing the Federation starship Enterprise and are responsible for its destruction. At this critical point, the still-recovering Spock discovers that the alien probe is attempting to communicate with the humpback whales on Earth; unfortunately, the humpback whales went extinct three centuries ago due to overfishing. Kirk orders the 'Bounty' to enter slingshot maneuver mode, using the gravitational pull of the Sun to travel through time to the late 20th century. The starship arrives in 1986 in San Francisco, California, where the crew hides the starship on a lawn in Golden Gate Park.
