The story takes place in Tulsa in the 1960s, where students are divided into two gangs: the South Side consisting of wealthy kids born with a silver spoon in their mouths, and the North Side filled with underprivileged boys from the slums. The two gangs have always been at odds, leading to intense conflicts and serving as a significant source of instability in the area. Ponyboy (played by C. Thomas Howell), Johnny (played by Ralph Macchio), and Dallas (played by Matt Dillon) are members of the North Side, and their friendship is very strong. During a violent confrontation, Johnny accidentally kills a South Side member named Bob (played by Leif Garrett). With Dallas's help, Ponyboy and Johnny hide in a church, which becomes a temporary haven for the two boys to escape the harsh external conflicts.
