Nine years after "2001: A Space Odyssey," former National Aeronautics and Space Administration director Dr. Floyd (played by Roy Scheider) accepts a U.S.-Soviet collaboration plan. He leads Dr. Chandra (played by John Lithgow), the designer of the Discovery spacecraft, and Dr. HAL9000's creator (played by Bob Balaban), to board a Soviet station near Jupiter, working with Soviet cosmonaut Tsiolkovsky (played by Helen Mirren) among others to dock with the American Discovery spacecraft. Their mission is to investigate the cause of an accident from nine years ago, explore the mysterious black monolith on Europa, and find out why astronaut David Bowman (played by Keir Dullea) mysteriously disappeared. However, as the mission proceeds, U.S.-Soviet relations become increasingly tense, with war on the brink; at the same time, David Bowman suddenly appears and issues a mysterious warning to Dr. Floyd. This film is adapted from Arthur C. Clarke's novel "2010: Odyssey Two," and won the Academy Awards for Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects, and Best Makeup in its 59th edition.
