Julia (played by Cathleen Nesbitt) is elderly and wealthy, but she has no children and thus no legitimate heir. To address this, she seeks out the witch, Blanche (played by Barbara Harris). Julia tells Blanche that her sister once had an illegitimate son, whom she gave away for adoption, and now she wants to find this poor child and have him inherit her fortune. Thus, Blanche and her lover George (played by Bruce Dern) begin their investigation, only to discover that the entire family that adopted Julia's nephew perished in a fire. The arsonist is none other than the person they are looking for—Edward (played by William Devane). Edward has since changed his name and become a jeweler, and he, clever and fearful of his past crimes being exposed, hires Maroni (played by Ed Lauter), who helped him evade punishment back then, to kill Blanche and her team.
