Young Maria (played by Angelina Muniz) is the daughter of a fisherman (played by José Valencio). Unfortunately, she is sold by her father to a pimp conman, Rufino (played by Luigi Piqui). Rufino renames her 'Karina' and forces her to engage in prostitution to earn money for him. Another pimp, Lucas (played by Claudio Cunha), is not willing to give up and tries to persuade Karina to leave Rufino and return to the life they used to have on his farm. One day, Rufino plays cards for money with Lucas and two others. After losing everything, Rufino bets Karina and ends up losing again. Karina refuses to leave with Lucas, which angers Rufino, who then beats her. Karina picks up a revolver from the drawer and kills Rufino. Once in prison, the court-appointed female lawyer Sheila (played by Rossina Malboison) promises to get her released and soon becomes Karina's legal guardian. After leaving prison, Karina moves into Sheila's seaside house. Lonely, Sheila gradually grows close to Karina, and they eventually establish a lesbian relationship. Unbeknownst to them, Lucas is still unwilling to back down and continues to stalk Karina.
