In a small village in the Pas-de-Calais region, the villagers decide to leave their homeland for survival. Paul (played by Olivier Gourmet), as the village chief, naturally bears the heavy responsibility of guiding the villagers, while his wife, Mado (played by Mathilde Seigner), also brings confidence and hope to the villagers in her unique way. Young Susanne (played by Alice Isaaz) does not follow the main group; instead, she embarks on a different journey with an 8-year-old German boy, as they seek the boy's father, Hans (played by August Diehl), who has been imprisoned under accusations of being a war criminal. As Susanne and the boy search for Hans, he too has not given up hope of finding his son.
