The Emperor of the Eastern Parlor (played by Daisuke Tachibana) has a favored concubine whose changing of clothes is envied by the other consorts. To prevent the consort's son from being harmed, the Emperor demotes him to a vassal and grants him the surname Genji. Hikaru Genji (played by Yoshihiko Hano) is charming and talented but faces a troubled career. Consequently, he spends his youth wandering amidst flowers and lush grass, enjoying it without end. Due to his strained relationship with his first wife, Lady Aoi, he turns to pursue his father's concubine, Fujitsubo (played by Izumi Ashikawa), with whom his fervent pursuit causes emotional pain. Ultimately, this affair leads Fujitsubo to give birth to a son whom the Emperor regards as his own. During this period, Genji seeks various women, and figures like Ukon, Yuyou, and the Sixth Princess leave important marks in his life. During a pilgrimage, Genji encounters Fujitsubo's niece, Murasaki (played by Ruriko Asaoka), and eventually brings the young Murasaki back to his residence to nurture and shape her into his ideal woman. Though love is sweet, it must still bear the pain of separation, and the illustrious Hikaru Genji must face every parting and loss himself. This film is adapted from the classic Japanese novel of the same name.
