Li Menghua (played by Tang Na) is just a poor scholar, yet he falls in love with the shopkeeper's daughter, Zhang Xiaoyun (played by Zhang Xinzhu). However, Zhang Xiaoyun is determined to marry the tea house manager Wang Junsheng (played by Gu Menghe) to fulfill her dream of becoming a boss's wife. Xiaoyun's best friend is about to step into the wedding hall with her beloved, and Xiaoyun wants to buy a coat to wear to her friend's wedding, but unfortunately, Li Menghua is too financially constrained to help, so he can only leave in embarrassment. Eventually, Xiaoyun devises a plan to have Wang Junsheng's secretary Xiao Chen (played by Cai Ruohong) pay for her coat. One day, after getting completely drunk, Xiaoyun is taken to Wang Junsheng's home, where they end up having a relationship amid some reluctance. Later, after a push from Xiaoyun's father, the two finally get married, but soon after, Wang Junsheng abandons Xiaoyun.
