At the beginning of the reform and opening-up, Li Xiaojun (played by Li Ming) bids farewell to his girlfriend Xiaoting (played by Yang Gongru) and comes to Hong Kong from Tianjin (Wuxi in the Mandarin version) to seek a living, hoping to make a lot of money one day to bring Xiaoting over and marry her in style.
