Young Marion Crane (played by Janet Leigh) works in Phoenix and is highly trusted by her boss, Mr. Lowery (played by Vaughn Taylor). Her boyfriend, Sam Loomis (played by John Gavin), runs a hardware store in Fairvale and is unable to remarry due to debts left by his deceased father and payments to his ex-wife. He can only meet Marion occasionally when he travels for work. Feeling dissatisfied with this situation, Marion seizes the opportunity to steal $40,000 in cash from her workplace on a Friday afternoon. However, her escape does not go smoothly: she is first spotted by Lowery as she leaves town, and early Saturday morning, she attracts the suspicion of the police. After spending $700 to trade her old car for a new one, Marion continues her anxious drive. As night falls, a heavy rainstorm blurs her vision, making it impossible to drive, forcing Marion to stop and spend the night at the Bates Motel. The owner, Norman (played by Anthony Perkins), is very friendly and tries to invite Marion to his home for dinner, but he is violently interrupted by his harsh mother, so he brings the dinner to the motel living room instead. Over dinner, Marion chats with Norman and finally decides to return to Phoenix on Sunday. After finishing her meal, Marion goes back to her room to take a shower. At that moment, the silhouette of an old woman suddenly appears in the bathroom...
