This film is adapted from the bestselling children's series of the same name by American author Jeff Kinney. On the first day of middle school, Greg Heffley (played by Zachary Gordon) is anxious and desperately wants to stand out and become a star in the class yearbook. Greg's older brother Rodrick (played by Devon Bostick) gives him a bunch of advice about what to do and what not to do, while his good friend Rowley Jefferson (played by Robert Capron) disregards it and continues to act just like in elementary school, wearing the same outfits and using the same phrases, which gives Greg a lot of headaches. Greg declines an invitation from a girl named Angie (played by Chloe Moretz) to join the school newspaper and instead drags Rowley along to join the school safety patrol. While trying to avoid three little bullies he offended on Halloween, Greg makes a mistake but lacks the courage to admit it, letting Rowley take the blame for him. As events unfold, things go from bad to worse, and Greg's popularity at school plummets, putting his friendship with Rowley in jeopardy...
