The story takes place in the notoriously crime-ridden Brownsville area of Brooklyn. Eddie Dugan (played by Richard Gere) is an old cop who has only a week left until retirement. After more than twenty years on the job, he has seen through the dirty rules of society and just wants to retire smoothly without any complications. However, things do not go as planned when he is assigned to oversee a rookie officer, who, like every new cop, is stubbornly idealistic about saving the world, which frustrates Eddie. Sari (played by Ethan Hawke) is a regular New York police officer with several kids, yet he still lives in a cramped black neighborhood with his wife and faces constant humiliation. To raise money to buy a house, he begins to consider stealing confiscated drug money from the precinct. Meanwhile, Tango (played by Don Cheadle) is an undercover cop assigned to infiltrate a drug cartel. After completing his final mission, he hopes to land a desk job he has always dreamed of, but the target of this mission is Kaz (played by Wesley Snipes), the drug dealer who once saved his life. Tango finds himself in a moral dilemma. Unexpectedly, fate brings these three desperate individuals to the same point.
