In the late Eastern Jin dynasty, a daughter of a wealthy family, Zhu Yingtai (played by Leslie Cheung), yearns to go to Hangzhou for her studies, but her father forbids her to do so, which causes Yingtai to lose her appetite and fall into melancholy. Soon, Yingtai comes up with a clever plan to disguise herself as a male scholar to explain to her father the cause of her illness, eventually convincing him to agree. On her journey to study, Yingtai, in her male disguise, coincidentally meets the charming and dashing Liang Shanbo (played by Lin Bo). The two get along well and decide to travel together. After three years as classmates, Yingtai and Shanbo become close friends, developing deep feelings for each other over their time spent together. However, due to the constraints of her identity, Yingtai is unable to express her true feelings. One day, as her father urges her to return home, she can only take leave and go back, leading to the classic scene of parting. Despite her hints and testing, the oblivious intended does not understand her feelings, and their farewell turns out to be forever...
