Zhao Shangzhi led the anti-Japanese guerrilla team, utilizing their familiarity with the terrain and employing flexible strategies to repeatedly inflict heavy damages on the Japanese invaders, causing continuous retreats. Ultimately, Itō Hiromu declared the campaign a failure after his favored troops led by General Suzuki and two of his sons were killed by the anti-Japanese forces, and his last son committed suicide out of war fatigue. Unfortunately, during one battle, Zhao Shangzhi was severely wounded, and while recovering, he fell in love with Jiang Xiaoxue, who cared for him, promising to marry her after the war's victory. Jiang Xiaoxue eagerly awaited the victory of the war and Zhao Shangzhi's return... Zhao Shangzhi continued to fight in the Bai Mountain and Black Water regions amid the chaos of war, and until his sacrifice, he was unable to fulfill his promise... On February 12, 1942, in a desperate situation on the battlefield, Itō Hiromu used a large sum of money to bribe a spy to injure and capture Zhao Shangzhi. Zhao Shangzhi, defiant and courageous, generously sacrificed himself for the independence and freedom of the Chinese nation at the age of 34.
