In Germany in 1942, 17-year-old Friedrich (played by Max Riemelt) trains hard, dreaming of one day joining the Nazi training camp. After going through rigorous examinations, he gets an opportunity, but his father strongly opposes it, so he forges his father's signature on the documents and successfully becomes a member of the training camp, starting his harsh daily training. There, he meets Albrecht (played by Tom Schilling), the son of a German officer, and the two develop a deep friendship. However, Albrecht is not enthusiastic about the Nazis and instead enjoys literature and writing. Albrecht's father hopes his son will follow in his footsteps and become a Nazi officer, leading to constant conflicts between them. In the training camp, Friedrich and Albrecht discover many ugly aspects, causing Friedrich's faith to waver. During a water training session, Albrecht never emerges from the water... This film won the Best Original Screenplay Award at the 2003 German Film Awards.
