The bank president, Ichimura (played by Hiroki Hasegawa), lives next door to them. He enjoys playing the violin, and his beautiful music often makes the mother and daughter temporarily forget the harsh reality. Ichimura's wife is in the countryside, and he stays alone in Tokyo. Sometimes, Riko helps out with chores at Ichimura's house, and through this, feelings unexpectedly develop between the two.
