The defeat at the Battle of Midway directly announced the failure of the Japanese army in the Pacific theater, and the stubbornly resisting Japanese troops remained on the southernmost island of Japan—Iwo Jima. This seemingly inconspicuous small island played host to some of the most brutal warfare in the Pacific during World War II. Major General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (played by Ken Watanabe) was the commander of the Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, responsible for this last defensive line of the Japanese army. General Kuribayashi worked hard to reform the internal bad habits and shortcomings of the Japanese military, and designed a complete set of combat plans primarily aimed at delaying the American forces. Although he and the twenty thousand officers and soldiers of the Japanese army were united in their resolve, faced with forty thousand American soldiers who had air superiority, Kuribayashi knew that this would be a war without a way back. Before the final battle, Kuribayashi wrote his last letter home...
