The story takes place in a coastal defense post in Taiwan during the 1970s. Goudan (played by Hao Shaowen) is a mischievous child in the village, spending his days following Sergeant Wu (played by Wu Zongxian) engaging in petty thefts and living a carefree life. Due to a lax military discipline and unsatisfactory performance, the superiors bring in a new captain (played by Wu Qilong), who vows to reform this unruly bunch within three months. After a series of laughable adjustments, military discipline indeed improves significantly, and during a US-China military exercise, they perform outstandingly. Although they narrowly lose to the US military, the Navy Command highly praises the new captain's leadership experience, and even Goudan's squad leader (played by Weng Hong) begins to take a liking to him. The new captain declines the promotion offered by superiors, convincing his father, who is a general, to allow him to stay here, and his father ultimately agrees to his request. Little do they know, Sergeant Wu and the others can't wait for him to leave because they simply can't endure his devilish training...
