Payne (played by Todd Babcock) is an American doctor living in the Shanghai International Settlement. By chance, he meets the Guomindang agent Haoming (played by Tao Zeru). Influenced by the October Revolution in his youth, Haoming once had great red ideals, but the brutality of the White Terror changed his original intentions, leading him to take up the knife to slaughter communists. Before committing suicide, Haoming's wife sent their daughter Qiuxiu to a church school. As Qiuxiu (played by Mei Ting) grew up, she joined the Communist Party under the influence of the communist Jin (played by Leslie Cheung) and pretended to be Jin's wife while hiding in Shanghai to treat Jin, who was seriously ill.
