Coriolanus is adapted from Shakespeare's work. The film version is set against the modern backdrop of the Iraq war, with 'Voldemort' transforming into the general Coriolanus. Ralph Fiennes' choice to use Shakespeare's famous tragedy as the material for his directorial debut is not accidental; ten years ago, he first performed Coriolanus at London’s Almeida Theatre, and since then, 'I've been fascinated by this work and its characters. I had a strong intuitive feeling that it could be set in a modern context and made into a film.' The film was shot in Baghdad, but the dialogue is entirely taken from Shakespeare's original text. Fiennes stated, 'In the aftermath of 9/11, various war images have always been visible in the media: from the Chechen uprising, Athenian protests, to riots in Paris; the economy was also in turmoil—all of this feels like it’s unfolding in a dramatic narrative.' Shakespeare's Coriolanus also begins with an economic crisis. Fiennes is confident that transferring Shakespeare's tragedy to modern society is not difficult, stating, 'Deborah Warner (a famous British stage director) brought a modern version of Julius Caesar to the stage in 2005, and I played Antony in it; in 1996, Baz Luhrmann made a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, still using Shakespeare's original lines.' The film uses the Iraq War as a backdrop; screenwriter John Logan expressed that 'Our first president, George Washington, was from the military, and later Eisenhower, Bush, and others were as well—military and politics have always been closely tied to American culture, and for me, this is the most worth exploring theme.' As for the political nature of Shakespeare's work, Fiennes believes: 'He leaves the audience with questions, not singular answers; his characters are always in moral dilemmas, allowing the audience to imagine the fate and the solutions to the problems.' Although Coriolanus has just premiered, reporters were eager to inquire if Fiennes would adapt Shakespeare's works for the screen again. He thought for a moment before revealing, 'We have discussed this before; although I don't know how likely it is, I would like to choose Antony and Cleopatra, not just because it’s a great love story but also because its structure is very cinematic. I think if Shakespeare were alive today, he would surely thrive in the film industry.' Coriolanus had a budget of only $10 million, and Fiennes also expressed at the press conference, 'I don’t know when I’ll make another Shakespeare film; it’s very difficult to get funding for movies.' He also took the opportunity to thank the three producers. The film’s North American distribution rights were acquired by the Weinstein Company during the film festival.
