Princess Anne of a certain European country (played by Audrey Hepburn) visits Rome, where she is burdened by state affairs but grows weary of the formalities. One night, exhausted in body and mind, she secretly ventures out to enjoy the night scenery and unexpectedly meets journalist Joe (played by Gregory Peck). The two explore the city hand in hand, sharing much joy. The princess even visits Joe's home and stays overnight. However, Joe unwittingly discovers the princess's true identity and decides to concoct an exclusive news story. Together with his friend and photographer Irving (played by Eddie Albert), Joe takes the princess around Rome, capturing many candid photos of her life. In the course of their time together, Joe gradually falls in love with the princess. To protect her image, Joe is forced to painfully abandon his career-making opportunity and gives the photos to the princess. After experiencing a day of freedom in Rome, Princess Anne ultimately realizes her responsibility to her country and resolutely returns to the embassy, choosing to give up love for the sake of her duty.
