After the grand royal wedding in Vienna, Sisi (played by Romy Schneider) begins her life as an empress. The domineering Empress Dowager adheres strictly to royal customs and constantly instills in Franz (played by Karlheinz Böhm) how he should abide by royal regulations to manage the empire and the family.
