American housewife Rikki Lambert (played by Audrey Hepburn) unexpectedly encounters a man who claims to be Peter Joshua (played by Gary Grant) at a ski resort in Megève, France. Upon returning to Paris, Rikki discovers her home has been ransacked and her husband Charles has been murdered. Rikki is summoned by the American embassy and meets CIA agent Hamilton (played by Walter Matthau), only to find out that the three strange men who attended Charles's funeral are his wartime companions who embezzled gold: Tex (played by James Coburn), Herman (played by George Kennedy), and Leopold (played by Ned Glass). Hamilton asks Rikki to help the government find the missing gold, while the three strange men relentlessly pursue her. Just when Rikki is falling in love, the three men are murdered, and the spotlight falls on the unpredictable Peter, putting Rikki in unprecedented danger. Gary Grant and Audrey Hepburn were nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress at the Golden Globe Awards for this film. Audrey Hepburn won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress.
