In 1976, 8-year-old Mary Daisy Dingle (voiced by Bethany Whitmore) is a little girl from Melbourne, Australia, who loves the animated series 'Noblet', sweetened condensed milk, and chocolate. Mary's mother is an alcoholic, and her father, who works at a tea packaging factory, only enjoys making bird taxidermy in his spare time. Lonely Mary has no friends and one day, on a whim, she writes a letter to Max Jerry Horowitz (voiced by Philip Seymour Hoffman) in New York City, asking where American children come from, and includes a cherry chocolate bar. 44-year-old Max, who suffers from autism and obesity, also happens to enjoy watching the 'Noblet' animated series and eating chocolate. Their pen pal relationship lasts from 1976 to 1994, during which they each experience many ups and downs in life, until adult Mary (voiced by Toni Collette) finally comes to New York to visit Max... This film won the Best Animated Feature Award at the 2009 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, the Crystal Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, and the top prize at the Ottawa International Animation Festival.
